Social and Behaviour Change Interventions for Promoting Newborn Care

Social and Behaviour Change Interventions for Promoting Newborn Care

Based on the findings of an evidence review conducted under Call to Action by Population Council, USAID and UNICEF, the policy brief showcases social and behaviour change (SBC) interventions to promote newborn care. These interventions include: o Use of women's groups for disseminating health messages among women in the community through group meetings and interpersonal communication o Home based newborn care and routine home visits by health volunteers or health workers and Dais during antenatal and postnatal period o Training of community health workers on issues related to maternal, neonatal and child health o Forming village or community health committees to increase the sense of ownership of the intervention programme and health care facility o Training of nurses and doctors of health facility The evidence review indicates that in spite of a weak health system either in terms of poorly trained human resources, lack of adequate infrastructure or the limited supply of medicines, these simpler approaches or interventions at the family and community levels lead to improved health behaviours and thus reduced neonatal mortality.

A health worker plays a dual role of speaker and facilitator of the discussion during these meetings. Therefore health workers should possess following skills for conducting effective group discussions: o Coordination, listening, summarising the discussion and time management o Ensuring proper seating space and adequate attendance and participation of members o Enabling all members to actively participate in the discussion and share their views and opinions The module also explains the process of conducting a group discussion on diarrhea. This module provides an introduction to the process of communication and explains the concepts of effective communication, art of listening and open-ended questions. The module discusses one-way and two-way communication. It also describes the communication cycle and its components including sender, receiver, message, medium and feedback. Effective communication is an important part of behaviour change communication. It helps in winning people's trust and is useful in discussing even personal and sensitive issues. Similarly active listening also helps in behaviour change. Active listening helps in knowing a person and gathering vital information about him/her and his/her family and community. It further facilitates identification and understanding of a person's needs, problems and potential challenges to behaviour change. While listening to the person, it is also important to ask questions to gather relevant information about him/her. Asking questions is also an art. A health worker should use open ended questions while communicating with a person. Additionally, questions should be worded in simple language. The health worker should avoid asking many questions at a time and the person must be given sufficient time to answer the questions. Suggested Audience: Health workers

It helps in winning people’s trust and is useful in discussing even personal and sensitive issues. Similarly active listening also helps in behaviour change. Active listening helps in knowing a person and gathering vital information about him/her and his/her family and community. It further facilitates identification and understanding of a person’s needs, problems and potential challenges to behaviour change.

The health worker also addresses the challenges to behaviour change arising from the family and community. • Trying out the new behavioural practice: At this stage also the health worker motivates the person and creates and maintains a supportive environment. • Repeating the behavioural practice: The health worker continues to motivate the person towards behaviour change and ensures a supportive environment. • Continuing the changed behaviour: As health worker extends constant support to the person he/she continues the behaviour. • Changed behaviour becomes a habit: Once the changed behaviour becomes a habit of the person, the health worker presents him/her as a role model before others.
