The module discusses menstruation and physical and psychological changes experienced by adolescent girls. It is also explained that discussion on menstruation is often considered a taboo in families and communities. In such a situation the role of health worker becomes critical in helping the adolescent girls. The health workers while counselling the adolescent girls must keep in mind that: • Menstruation is a sensitive subject and girls may not open up on their own and their families may not approve of discussions on menstruation. Therefore, the health workers should create awareness among families and communities on the subject before discussing it with girls. • To understand adolescent girls and their problems, health workers should be sympathetic to them • While discussing adolescent views, problems and reactions on the subject the health workers should remain unbiased • Health workers should be sensitive to adolescent girls and their views • They should maintain confidentiality • They should create a supportive environment for discussion, actively listen to adolescents and encourage them to ask questions and clarify doubts Suggested Audience: Health workers

It also brings out the challenges faced in organising group meetings such as starting the meeting on time, low attendance, only few people take the lead during the group discussion. Despite these challenges, group discussions are beneficial because they provide people the opportunity to share their view before the group, it brings members closer to each other and different and divergent aspects of a topic are discussed during these meetings. A health worker plays a dual role of speaker and facilitator of the discussion during these meetings. The module explains the use of Village Health and Nutrition Day (VHND) as an effective platform for interpersonal communication and counselling by health workers. The module with the help of a story depicts the importance of creating a conducive environment for interpersonal communication during the VHND and communicating four important messages post immunisation. The four key messages which must be communicated by the ANM to the mother after immunisation are: • Which vaccine was given against which disease/s • Common problems that may occur after the vaccination • When should the mother and child come for next vaccination • Telling the mother to keep the mother and child protection card safely and bringing it during the next vaccination The module also highlights that during the VHND the venue should be kept neat and clean, there should be adequate space for people to sit and roles of different people including ANM, health worker AWW should be allocated before. All this will be instrumental in creation on a conducive environment for interpersonal communication and counselling during VHND. Apart from this, ANM and health worker should treat the community members respectfully, greet and smile at them and give them enough time to ask questions and clarify their doubts. Training Module 4 – ”Aapasi sanchaar ke liye zaroori koshal tatha moolya” ”Saamajik evam vyavhaar parivartan sanchaar” ”Swasthya karyakarta prasikshan module shrankhla”

The module focuses on skills and value of effective interpersonal communication. It describes the importance of giving examples, encouraging people to talk and share their views and repeating important phrases and words said by people. Similarly, asking people to repeat what the speaker said to ensure that they have understood everything is important. It is also important to summarise the points a number of times during the discussion. Apart from this, use of gestures, facial expression and non-verbal cues to make the communication is also critical. With the help of a role play activity the module also discusses in detail the gestures and non-verbal cues to be used to make interpersonal communication effective. A list of points to remember to make interpersonal communication effective has also been provided in the module. These include, • Behaving in a dignified and respectful manner • Providing correct and complete information • Keeping in mind people’s interest, respecting their time and convenience • Maintaining confidentiality • Being positive and accepting people the way they are • Don’t judge people before hand • Maintaining sensitive and balanced behaviour • Encouraging people to ask questions Suggested Audience: Health workers
