Training Module 7 – ”Samooh ke saath sanchaar” ”Saamajik evam vyavhaar parivartan sanchaar” ”Swasthya karyakarta prasikshan module shrankhla”

The module focuses on group communication and provides the knowledge and skills required by health workers to organise and conduct group meetings. It also brings out the challenges faced in organising group meetings such as starting the meeting on time, low attendance, only few people take the lead during the group discussion. Despite these challenges, group discussions are beneficial because they provide people the opportunity to share their view before the group, it brings members closer to each other and different and divergent aspects of a topic are discussed during these meetings. A health worker plays a dual role of speaker and facilitator of the discussion during these meetings. Therefore health workers should possess following skills for conducting effective group discussions: o Coordination, listening, summarising the discussion and time management o Ensuring proper seating space and adequate attendance and participation of members o Enabling all members to actively participate in the discussion and share their views and opinions The module also explains the process of conducting a group discussion on diarrhea. This module provides an introduction to the process of communication and explains the concepts of effective communication, art of listening and open-ended questions. The module discusses one-way and two-way communication. It also describes the communication cycle and its components including sender, receiver, message, medium and feedback. Effective communication is an important part of behaviour change communication. It helps in winning people's trust and is useful in discussing even personal and sensitive issues. Similarly active listening also helps in behaviour change. Active listening helps in knowing a person and gathering vital information about him/her and his/her family and community. It further facilitates identification and understanding of a person's needs, problems and potential challenges to behaviour change. While listening to the person, it is also important to ask questions to gather relevant information about him/her. Asking questions is also an art. A health worker should use open ended questions while communicating with a person. Additionally, questions should be worded in simple language. The health worker should avoid asking many questions at a time and the person must be given sufficient time to answer the questions. Suggested Audience: Health workers

ODEP Advocacy Maharahtra Film (Marathi)

ODEP Advocacy Maharahtra Film (Marathi)

Synopses: Through this video, implementation of Open Defecation Elimination Campaign in Rural Maharashtra has been depicted. This campaign is being implemented by Water Supply and Sanitation Department, Government of Maharashtra with the support of UNICEF and PRIMOVE. Open Defecation Elimination Plan (ODEP) is a community-led process to develop a plan to make the village open defecation free (ODF). The plan preparation requires community consultation for identification of household toilets to be constructed or repaired and improvement of institutional sanitation facilities in schools and anganwadi centres. It also involves laying down roles and responsibilities of stakeholders. Through this process an actionable plan emerges to make the village ODF and this plan is termed as ODEP. This approach is different from PRA and CLTS because it not only seeks to trigger and motivate the community but also encompasses aggregating the demand and exploring appropriate technical options with a plan of supply chain, developing a community based monitoring system and ensuring suitability. The main goal of the campaign is to make Maharashtra open defecation free by October 2, 2019. Suggested Audience: Government Officials at all levels; PRI members
